Magdalena Combined School

Magdalena School
This combined public school includes a central
library and adjacent outdoor courtyard. The town of Magdalena is at an elevation of 8,000 feet in the New Mexican high desert. Therefore, key design considerations included climate concerns such as wind protection and sun exposure. This led to a design of linked, protected courtyards.

The project received design awards from the New Mexico Society of Architects and the Western Mountain Region of the American Institute of Architects. In addition, it was published extensively in the American and overseas architectural press. Overall site safety issues resulted in a design that included clearly defined gateways and enclosures to separate students from vehicle traffic. Magdalena School

The overall image of the building is derived from New Mexico architectural motifs including Mission- style masonry construction and patterns that reflect the aesthetics of the nearby Alamo- Navajo community. In addition, the overall grouping of elements is designed to reflect the overall quality of the New Mexican high desert landscape.

Mr. Diament was asked to design 35,000 square feet of enclosed, connected space— kitchen and dining facilities, administrative offices, kindergarten, and elementary and middle school. Prior to this, a gymnasium had been built and a master plan undertaken.

“Diament began his task with these requirements: maintain internal relationship, circulation patterns, and overall site relationships set forth by the master plan; provide visual continuity with the gymnasium; and allow for future additions."

“Diament gave each element of the complex identity by varying the entrances...As these entries vary, so do the corresponding courtyards, thus ultimately creating what appears to be a cluster of separate buildings.”

The school is designed to protect students from severe winds, driving snow and intense sun of the high desert climate. The elementary school entrance shown on this page includes a playground surrounded by wing walls and windbreaks, an entry court protected by the building itself, and smaller protective elements within the entry court itself.

The school is designed to provide a variety of spaces for its students. These include a multi-purpose room, an inner courtyard, play structures and inviting protected outdoor spaces and entries.Magdalena School
